Spain Family Road Trip: One Month from Barcelona to Seville

By Ayesha, Founder & Travel Specialist7 October 20269 min read

Our family road trip through Spain began the moment we landed in Barcelona. The city's colour, warmth and easy Mediterranean lifestyle made us feel at home straight away.

In May 2013, we spent a whole month exploring Spain, mostly by car, staying in comfortable 4-star hotels and taking each region at our own pace. Barcelona's famous landmarks, seaside walks and lively streets set the tone before we headed south.

Spain has changed a lot since then, with new hotels, faster trains and even more to see, but the warmth, the food and the slow, beautiful way of life are just the same. That's why I still recommend it to families today.

Our route at a glance:

Barcelona → Valencia → Alicante → Murcia → Almería → Granada → Málaga → Seville → Córdoba → flight back to Barcelona

Perfect for: families, couples and anyone who loves sunshine, history and good food.

Driving through Spain's most beautiful cities

Our first drive took us from Barcelona to Valencia, a bright, modern city that's perfect for families who love parks, beaches and relaxed evenings.

Barcelona set the tone — colour, warmth and the Mediterranean way of life.

Next came Alicante, where calm coastal days and sunsets over the marina made us slow down and enjoy the moment. In Murcia, we found authentic local life, friendly people and traditional flavours.

Then we drove into Almería, which surprised us with dramatic desert landscapes and quiet coastal views, completely different from anywhere else on our route.

History, art and Spanish traditions

In Granada, the beauty of the Alhambra and a powerful flamenco performance gave us a deeper connection to Spain's artistic spirit.

Málaga gave us sunshine, beaches and unforgettable family dinners by the sea.

Seville dazzled us with its grand plazas, Moorish palaces and historic charm. We also saw a traditional bullfighting show, a centuries-old part of Spanish culture.

Our last stop was Córdoba, where the arches of the Mezquita and the ancient streets made us feel we had stepped into another era.

Food, flavour and family moments

Food became one of the highlights of our trip, especially paella, rich and perfect for sharing, along with tapas and fresh seafood.

And one thing every visitor must try: Spanish coffee. Strong, smooth and an absolute must. Every meal felt like a chance to slow down and enjoy Spain's warm, welcoming way of life.

Tips for a Spain road trip

Tips from my trip

  • Book Alhambra tickets well in advance. They often sell out, especially in summer.
  • Hire a car with enough boot space for the whole family's luggage, and request child seats when you book.
  • Choose hotels with parking. Old town centres can be narrow and hard to drive in.
  • Mix driving and flying. For long distances, a short domestic flight can save a full day in the car.
  • Remember that many shops close in the afternoon, and dinner in Spain is late, often from 9pm.
  • Plan 2 or 3 nights in each main city, so it feels like a holiday, not a race.

A journey that became a family memory

By the time we flew back to Barcelona, Spain had become more than a destination. It had become a family memory: a month of sunshine, history, flavour and slow, beautiful living. All these years later, it's still one of my favourite family trips in Europe.

That's the kind of trip I love planning for my clients: the right route, hand-picked hotels, car hire and the little details sorted, so you can just enjoy it.
